Most of the pictures from comics were scanned in by myself but in some cases, especially in my 'casting' sections, I got the pictures off the Net and couldn't remember where I got them from, though whenever possible I have written to the owner of the website to ask permission. If you see anything on this site which you think is yours and would like me to remove it or credit you for it, please email me and I will do it gladly.

About Me

My name is Joanna Chan Shi-En, and I'm currently a first-going-on-second-year student of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. Contrary to all appearances, I DO actually have an active and healthy social life, haha! I shall be twenty in July 2005.

If you're wondering how someone of my generation came to be reading Biggles, the answer is - my father and uncle between them had accumulated about forty titles from their childhood in the 60's in Malaysia, and I started reading them when I was 13 (the collection has since been swelled to about 50 books).

Wedge stood out for me the very first time I watched Star Wars (also aged 13), though I only discovered the X-Wing books when I was 16. Thanks to my father, a military history buff (I gather that Biggles, from his own boyhood, played a big part in this), my brothers and I were raised on a steady diet of war movies and books. We all acquired a taste for war films, aviation, etc as a result. (I continue to be a mere amateur at this, however, in comparison to my brothers, who can rattle off lists of statistics of aircraft, battles, tanks, etc, while I can barely differentiate a Spitfire and a Hurricane!) Wedge is the X-Wing pilot I like most, but my favourite Biggles team pilot is actually Algy (by a very narrow margin).

My other fictional heroes include Dr Stephen Maturin (from Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series) and Combeferre (from Les Miserables). I'm also a big fan of Father Brown (GK Chesterton) and Monk (with whom I identify quite a lot). I'm a sucker for detective stories and action-adventure and I like Lord Peter Wimsey, Inspector Rebus, the Lymond Chronicles, Hornblower, etc etc... My favourite poets are Shelley, GK Chesterton and Louis MacNeice, and my favourite books include Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, The Once and Future King by TH White, The Book of Sorrows by Walter Wangerin Jr, Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey, The Untouchable by John Banville and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. My interests include reading, writing and drawing, though I'm still pretty amateurish at all of them. At various points of my life, I have been a really obsessed fan of King Arthur, Les Miserables, the French Revolution, Biggles and Star Wars, sometimes concurrently.

My life is a miracle. In 2001, when I was sixteen, I came to know God personally for the first time ever – the most exciting thing which has ever happened to me, and which completely transformed me from a depressed, neurotic person who could see nothing in life but defeat and despair into my present ludicrously happy self :) (Read my personal account here)
